International, special-needs or ordinary specialist clinic?

Compare booking, language support, examinations and insurance arrangements before choosing a clinic in China.

Practical notes·

Confirm the exact clinic

International departments, special-needs clinics and ordinary specialist clinics can follow different booking and payment arrangements within one hospital. Check the appointment category, campus and clinician before paying. A higher consultation fee does not tell you when every examination will be available.

A foreign passport does not automatically require the international route: Peking Union Medical College Hospital lists passports among the documents accepted for outpatient registration.

Compare the complete visit

  • Ask what the consultation charge covers and which tests are charged separately.
  • Confirm the language available for your appointment and whether an interpreter can attend.
  • Ask how imaging and laboratory appointments are arranged after the doctor orders them.
  • Keep the written booking confirmation and check each examination's date and location.

Check the insurance route

PUMCH distinguishes its ordinary and special-needs clinics from its international department for commercial-insurance account payment. Do not assume those categories are interchangeable.

For the clinic you choose, confirm direct billing with both the hospital and insurer. Check your policy's coverage and authorization requirements. PUMCH's international department explains that patients outside its direct-billing arrangements pay first and claim afterward; even direct billing can leave uncovered costs. Ask which receipts, itemized bills and records you need before the visit.
