Returning unused medical funds overseas

Trace the original payment and confirm the hospital and bank process for returning an unused treatment balance overseas.

Practical notes·

Plan the return before paying

Before sending a large treatment deposit, ask hospital finance which account receives it, which currency is credited and how an unused balance can be returned. Confirm the handling bank's requirements for your payment route, especially if a relative, employer or insurer pays.

Keep the payment trail connected

  • Keep the payment instruction and bank or card receipt.
  • Save the hospital's deposit acknowledgment, final account and refund correspondence.
  • Provide the original payment reference when requesting the return.
  • Ask the hospital and bank which supporting documents are needed for your case.

SAFE's service-trade guidance generally connects the refund payer and recipient to the original transaction. It also allows banks to review explanations when the parties differ. Tell finance staff early if the original account has closed or the payer's details have changed.

Confirm processing and arrival

Ask who bears transfer and intermediary-bank charges, whether currency conversion is involved, when the instruction will be sent and how to trace it. Hospital approval, bank processing and final credit overseas are separate stages.

Unused foreign currency in your own account, reconversion of previously exchanged renminbi and a hospital refund can follow different routes. Ask the bank which applies. A general annual foreign-exchange figure alone does not determine your refund limit or guarantee approval.
