A medical emergency during visa-free transit in China

How to contact exit-entry authorities and prepare a stay-permit application when illness disrupts visa-free transit.

Practical notes·

Check the permission you actually received

Keep your passport, entry record and onward itinerary together. Confirm the expiry and permitted travel area recorded for your admission. A hospital appointment or admission does not itself change these conditions.

Contact exit-entry authorities before expiry

Under the National Immigration Administration’s transit guidance, travellers with urgent, reasonable grounds or force majeure who need additional time or travel outside the permitted area should apply in advance to the local public-security exit-entry administration for a stay permit. This is a stay-permit procedure, not an automatic extension of an ordinary tourist visa.

Prepare a focused application file

  • Have your valid passport, application form and required photograph ready.
  • Ask the hospital for evidence explaining the illness, admission or travel limitation and relevant dates.
  • Ask the local office what additional evidence and appointment arrangements apply.
  • If illness prevents attendance, ask whether a relative or other permitted representative can apply for you.

Confirm the decision and departure arrangements

The national service guide allows appropriate representation where illness causes mobility difficulties. Approval and permitted duration depend on the application; illness does not guarantee an additional fixed period. Keep the application receipt and follow the office’s instructions about documents, collection and departure. For policy questions, contact the NIA’s 12367 service.
