China's 240-hour visa-free transit, and what it does not cover

China’s 240-hour visa-free transit: check nationality, ports, permitted areas and onward travel before planning a medical visit.

Policy·2026-08-12Updated

Eligible travellers may use 240-hour visa-free transit through designated ports and within permitted areas when continuing to a third country or region. Check the National Immigration Administration’s current eligibility and route requirements before planning a medical visit.

Visa-free transit is based on an onward journey, not a return to the departure country or region. The permitted area and duration still apply during medical care. If planned treatment or follow-up may exceed those conditions, ask the Chinese visa authority which advance entry arrangement fits your circumstances. The S2 visa guide is a starting point for checking documentation, not a guarantee that S2 is required or available for every patient.

Where it fits a medical trip

  • Ask the hospital to confirm appointment, test-result and review dates before booking travel.
  • Check that the full itinerary, including any follow-up, fits the permitted duration and area.
  • If timing is uncertain, confirm a suitable entry arrangement before departure rather than assuming transit can be extended.

If urgent medical circumstances disrupt the trip after entry, contact the local public-security exit-entry administration before permission expires to ask about a stay permit. Hospital admission does not automatically extend the permitted stay.
